UBC Tournament Part 2

Soooooooo.....this morning (Saturday morning) I met up with my partner Jason at the Canada Line and we went to UBC right away. They served breakfast there and after for like an hour or so we were ready to debate our second topic for round 3 which was be it resolved that teachers never allowed to strike. Our opponents were on the opposition side and we were on the government affirmative side. They were pretty good actually! While trying to come up with things to refute their statements, I also wrote down some of their good points because I knew that we would be on the opposition side as well in round 4. It was also a very close debate!

Then we went to round 4 and this time we were side opposition. Our opponents' points to be honestly were ehhhhhhhhhhhderp. My partner was so pissed because the other team was using a quite sarcastic and mocking tone toward us and using harsh words such as "ridiculous" (you are not suppose to use words such as ridiculous, stupid, etc in a formal debate tournamnet) but I was really excited because I think our points were much MUCH better and we probably won that round.

Then we had lunch! We had butter chicken, chick pea curry and rice. It was quite nice.

Then we came to our final round before the finals. The 5th round. This time, we were given an impromptu topic: be it resolved that all nations be allowed to have nuclear arms. My team was on the opposition side as I was like yesssssssssssssssss. Our opponents were two private school girls (probably from York House or Craften House---did I spell that correctly?) Anyways, I think we did a pretty good job on that one too, because the other team was going off topic in the middle of their speech. Although their speech was fluent (ours too), their points weren't as strong and convincing, and they went off topic. I think we totally bossed that round.

Unfortunately, non of the Churchill debaters made it into the finals....only four teams were selected out of more than a 100 teams (two teams junior, two teams senior). But we've gained valuable knowledge and experience! I really look forward to our next tournament! This is really fun! We didn't lose at all----instead we've all gained something important and learned valuable lessons!

Btw, we also watched the junior's finals-----the first place team was from West Point Grey (private school) and the first speaker was like BEAST. His speech was like so fluent and fast and there was absolutely NO HESITATION whatsoever! It was perfect! Both teams did amazing job!
